About Bako Sanctuary

Who We Are

Bako Sanctuary is a community-led support organisation created by and for Black African families navigating life in the UK. We understand that immigration status shouldn't define your safety, stability, or future—yet for many, it creates a web of overlapping crises that can feel impossible to untangle alone.

We are here to walk alongside you.

In the UK, many families face complex, overlapping challenges that require engagement with multiple agencies at the same time. These challenges are particularly acute for families who are subject to immigration control.

Families can suddenly lose the right to work, the right to rent, and access to public funds. When this happens, an immigration issue quickly becomes a housing, financial, and safeguarding crisis. Everyday necessities — such as paying rent, keeping utilities connected, or maintaining stability for children — can become impossible almost overnight.

These pressures are often compounded by hidden vulnerabilities, including domestic abuse. For some individuals, immigration status, financial dependency, and fear of enforcement create additional barriers to seeking help or leaving unsafe situations.

This is not a marginal issue. It is a recurring and growing reality for many families in the UK — and Bako exists to ensure they are not left to face it alone.

Why We Exist

Our Values

Pillars of Support

Domestic Violence Support

We provide secure, peer-led support for families affected by abuse, recognising the complex interplay between domestic violence, immigration status, socioeconomic challenges, and social isolation. We offer non-judgmental support and help individuals access appropriate specialist services safely.

Safeguarding Children

We provide comprehensive support to families expressing concerns regarding their children's safety. Our approach involves expertly navigating safeguarding frameworks and educational procedures, emphasising informed advocacy and fostering a deep understanding of the relevant systems.

Immigration Support and Navigation

Facilitating informed connections between families and regulated immigration advisers, and supporting individuals to understand and navigate complex immigration processes. Through access to peer support, individuals are better equipped to engage with these systems with greater confidence and clarity.

Protection from Exploitation

Exploitation can come in many forms: from unregulated advisers and predatory employers to unscrupulous landlords and service providers. We educate individuals on how to recognise signs of manipulation, understand their rights, and safely report misconduct—whether in immigration, housing, employment, or other essential services. Our goal is to equip you with the knowledge to navigate systems safely and access legitimate, regulated support.

Employment Pathways Support

We support individuals whose skills and qualifications are overlooked, often leaving them in roles below their abilities. By providing guidance on employment rights and navigating immigration-related challenges, we help families access fair opportunities and rebuild confidence in the workplace.

Peer Support and Community Connection

Fostering community through individual peer matching, support groups, and organised gatherings—effectively diminishing feelings of isolation and cultivating environments characterised by belonging and mutual understanding.

The Way We Cope

We recognise that unaddressed trauma, fear of reporting abuse, and lack of accessible support can lead some individuals to use substances as a way of coping. When systemic barriers compound this pain, the cycle can feel inescapable.

Our approach provides impartial, trauma-informed support that acknowledges substance use within the context of domestic violence, immigration stress, and systemic neglect. We offer harm reduction strategies and recovery pathways tailored to your circumstances—because healing is possible, and no one should have to cope alone.

Support & Accompaniment

We attend important appointments with you - providing culturally informed support, helping you prepare, and ensuring your voice is heard in meetings with Children's Social Care, housing, healthcare, and other services.

Our Approach

Experience-Informed Practice

BAKO is shaped by an informed understanding of the realities faced by individuals navigating immigration insecurity, family breakdown, and social exclusion. We recognise the complexity and sensitivity of these experiences and are committed to working responsibly, alongside qualified professionals, to ensure support is ethical, safe, and appropriately delivered.

Peer Support

BAKO offers peer-led support grounded in shared understanding and cultural awareness, not clinical or legal authority. Peer support helps reduce isolation, build trust, and reduce shame, while clear boundaries ensure that specialist needs are met through appropriate professional referrals.

Trauma-Aware Practice

We recognise that families often face multiple, interconnected challenges at the same time. Our support considers emotional, social, cultural, and practical factors, and is delivered with sensitivity, discretion, and respect for individual circumstances.

Informed Choice

We help families understand systems, processes, and available options in ways that are accessible and culturally respectful. Our role is to support understanding, not to direct decisions, enabling informed and confident engagement with complex systems.

Safe Spaces

BAKO provides welcoming, non-judgmental spaces where individuals are treated with dignity, regardless of immigration status, background, culture, or belief. We listen carefully and ensure people are heard without pressure or assumption.

Partnership

We work alongside regulated advisers, statutory services, and community organisations to ensure support is coordinated, appropriate, and responsible. Collaboration strengthens safeguarding and outcomes.

Community

We recognise shared experience as a source of connection and resilience. Through peer support and shared learning, we foster belonging and mutual understanding while respecting personal boundaries and individual choice.

Our Commitment

BAKO operates with compassion, discretion, and cultural humility. We recognise that not all vulnerabilities are visible and that safety, trust, and dignity must underpin all support offered.

We work with families, not over them—focusing on practical, realistic support that reflects the pressures and realities they face.

Creative Connection

Most individuals in our community come from backgrounds rooted in hands-on creativity, such as beading, crochet, and sewing. BAKO offers a space to engage in these activities as a means of connection, skill-sharing, and community participation, without pressure or expectation.
